One big thing: The NCAA has prohibited recruiting contact between Division I coaches and a baseball student-athlete or their family until August 1st of junior year.
Go deeper:
- Players in all high school classes are allowed to communicate with coaches at institutional camps (on a college campus) and non-institutional camps (such as Headfirst Honor Roll Camps).
- Pre-existing verbal commits are also prohibited from further contact until August 1 of junior year.
- The rule applies only to D1 schools and became official today, 4/26/23. Read more here.
- Communication with D2 & D3 schools is not affected, though their underclassmen recruiting contact is far less prevalent.
Why it matters:
- This recruiting change is a long-overdue effort to slow down the pace of early college commitments in baseball – and follows recent NCAA changes in softball and lacrosse.
- For underclassmen prior to August 1 of junior year, camps will become the only venue for allowed contact with Division I coaches.
- For rising juniors, recruiting events positioned in early August will also become a first live opportunity for juniors to have permissible recruiting contact with these coaches.
What’s next:
- All stakeholders will be watching carefully as the rules become official.
